SALT STRESS ON HORTICULTURE

Viewed : 1411 - Downloaded : 639 Stress, as a general term, is a biochemical, physiological and behavioral reaction resulting from an inbalance and lack of order within some functions and systems of living organisms, due to negative environmental conditions. Each environmental factor that is not suitable for living organisms is known as stress whereas reactions of plants against negative environmental conditions differ considerably. Salinity is a limiting factor for plants that negatively affects growth and development.

As known, more than half of cultivation area in Turkey is dry or semidry. Such area are not suitable for agriculture due to the fact that drought causes salinity in soil. Moreover, the problem gradually assumes even greater importance, since our land suitable for cultivation is under the threat of drought.

This essay is aimed to shed further light on issues such as salt stress, sources thereof, calculation of salt stress and solutions to this problem. Keywords :
