Crossing of genetically different maize materials is regarded as one of the basic conditions for high level
heterosis. The objectives of this study were to identify the genetic distances of maize inbred lines with the SSR
markers, to assign lines to the heterotic groups and to obtain data for crossing programs for future studies. In the
study, twenty maize inbred lines which were dent, semi dent, flint and semi flint types both developed in Turkey
and in abroad were used. In the research, 21 SSR markers were used and a total of 51 alleles were produced.
Average of 2.42 alleles was found per mean SSR locus. Polymorphism information content (PIC) values ranged
from 0.15 to 0.92. As a result of the data analysis, four main and eight sub-groups were formed according to the
unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean method (UPGMA). It was understood that the inbreds were
belong to Lancaster, Stiff- Stalk, Tropical and unrelated genetic background. Molecular characterization shows
that lines have wide genetic diversity.
